Celebrating Local Brewing: Pioneer APA & Surrey Pale Ale from Pilgrim at The Light

At The Light, we are all about celebrating the very best of our local community—whether that is through unforgettable film experiences, great food, or carefully chosen drinks. That is why we are so proud to serve not just one, but two incredible brews from Pilgrim Brewery in Reigate, Surrey: Pioneer APA and Surrey Pale Ale.

A Brewery with Heritage

Founded back in 1982, Pilgrim Brewery is a true pioneer of the craft beer movement. As the oldest craft brewery in the South East, it’s steeped in history and rooted in local pride. Sitting on the famous Pilgrims’ Way, the brewery draws inspiration from centuries of community and tradition, while continuing to push forward with fresh ideas and bold flavours.

Under the care of Adrian and Rory since 2017, Pilgrim Brewery has modernised while staying true to its heritage. It’s not just about making beer—it’s about creating connections and keeping Reigate firmly on the map for craft brewing.

Pioneer APA: A Local Favourite with a Global Twist

The Pioneer APA (American Pale Ale) is the perfect showcase of Pilgrim’s style. At around 4.5% ABV, it’s approachable yet full of character. Brewed with hops sourced from Washington’s Pacific Northwest, Pioneer bursts with stone-fruit aromas that draw you in, fresh berry and tropical notes on the palate, and a smooth, refreshing finish that makes it oh-so-drinkable.

It’s hazy, vibrant, and crafted with care—bringing a taste of the wider world right back to our local community.

Surrey Pale Ale: A Heritage Classic

Balancing out Pioneer’s modern American style is the timeless Surrey Pale Ale (3.7% ABV, 20 IBU). First brewed in 1983, it’s one of Pilgrim’s earliest and most beloved beers, firmly part of their heritage range. Brewed with Whitbread Golding and Styrian Golding hops, alongside Maris Otter and Crystal malt, it delivers a well-rounded, malty flavour, and gentle citrus and floral notes. It's a smooth, easy-drinking character perfect for a session pint.

Available in bottles that are gluten-free and vegan, Surrey Pale Ale is as inclusive as it is delicious. With its history, balance, and drinkability, it captures the essence of traditional English brewing while keeping its local roots strong.
